FutureLab product “CableWalker” is a contact technology for the power lines diagnostic with the use of drones. After takeoff, the drone lands on the line and begins moving along the wire using a wheel module. The advantages of this technology are the ability to deliver diagnostic equipment without switching off the powerline.
The main problem that arose during the development of the system is to ensure an accurate landing on the wire. FutureLab asked Tsuru Robotics to develop a precision landing system. We designed a system for the automatic landing of the UAV on the wire in various landscapes and weather conditions, and also optimized the flight characteristics of the UAV.
The diagnostic drone can now independently find the wire and land on it. This allows the company to avoid a pilot error that could happen because the power lines are very high, and sometimes due to the bright sun, it is almost impossible to land the drone correctly manually. Also, this technology almost completely eliminates the risk of occupational injuries or accidents during diagnostics.
According to current plans, in 2020-21 two projects will be implemented with the use of “CableWalker” – with the companies “Rosseti Ural” and Saudi Electricity Company in Saudi Arabia.
